Perez Leads Phillies to Defeat of Mets

National League
Pittsburgh 5 at Chicago 6 (10)
-The Cubs defeat the division leaders for the second straight day as rookie Wayne Tyrone drives in the winning run off the struggling Bob Moose (2-1, 8.79) who was forced into action because of bullpen fatigue.
St. Louis 7 at Montreal 4
-Gary Sutherland (.307) had four hits and Reggie Smith (.250) hit his 14th home run of the season as the Cardinals halt a four game slide
New York 1 at Philadelphia 3
-Tony Perez (.333) continues to swing a hot bat as his double in the 8th plated Garry Maddox with the game winning run. Tom Hilgendorf (3-3, 2.03) and Tug McGraw (12Sv, 2.23) excelled in relief again for Philadelphia
Los Angeles 4 at Atlanta 5 (11)

-Darrel Chaney’s (.260) triple off Al Downing (1-2, 1.82) in the 11th re-establishes the Braves in 4th place a game ahead of the visiting Dodgers. Max Leon (5-1, 1.77) pitched two shutout innings in relief for the win
Houston 10 at Cincinnati 8
-The Astros score ten runs again at Riverfront  - and this time it’s enough to win. Houston led 10-1 in the 4th and had to hang on thanks to two shutout innings from Ken Forsch (15Sv, 2.25). Reds starter Bill Bonham (7-5, 4.47) was torched for seven runs who fall back into 3rd place despite Johnny Bench’s (.265 17HR) two home runs.
San Francisco 6 at San Diego 5 (11)
-
The Giants score two in the 9th off closer Rollie Fingers (3.30) to tie it and then win it in extras on pitcher Charlie Williams solo home run off usually reliable Danny Frisella (4-3, 3.29). The Padres division lead is now two games over Houston after this stunning defeat.

American League
New York 4 at Baltimore 6
-The Yankees trailed 6-0 in the 9th and drew closer on a Graig Nettles (.245 10HR)  two out grand slam that broke up Steve Luebber’s (3-0, 2.48) shutout bid. The next two Yankees reached but Dyar Miller (4Sv, 2.17) was able to retire Lou Piniella (.266) to finally close the game out.
Detroit 5 at Cleveland 4 (17)
-Six Tiger relievers shut the Indians out on two hits and no walks over nine innings including former Indian Bob Reynolds who got the win in his season debut after being signed as a free agent last week. A fatigued Harry Parker (3-7, 5.31) was forced into the game because of it’s length and lost for the third consecutive day and the fifth time in the Indians last nine.
Boston 4 at Milwaukee 2
-The Red Sox have defeated the Brewers 4-2 three times in two days. Dwight Evans (.312) had three hits, three RBI’s and hit his 9th home run of the season
Oakland 1 at Chicago 3
-White Sox ace Jerry Koosman (9-4, 3.01) pitches eight strong innings to hand A’s rookie Mike Norris 94-1, 3.15) his first defeat
Minnesota 8 at Kansas City 5 (10)
-
Rookie Bob Randall (.174) laced a bases-loaded, bases clearing double in the 10th as the last place Twins keep the Royals in 2nd place a half game behind Oakland. Dan Ford (11) and Eric Soderholm (14) homered for Minnesota.
Texas 3 at California 4 (10)
-Rookie Lee Mazzilli’s (.225 6HR) 9th inning home run tied it for the Rangers and they’d take a lead in the 10th on a Lamar Johnson single. However Rangers relievers issued three walks in the bottom half including one of Don Baylor by Stan Thomas as the Angels rallied to win
