Sutton's 10th Vaults A's Into First

American League
Cleveland 6 at Boston 7 (14)
- The Red Sox led 5-0 after the 3rd but gave up three run home runs to Toby Harrah (.255 9HR) and Gorman Thomas (.247 16HR) in the middle innings. They trailed by one with two out in the 9th but Steve Dillard (.310) lashed an RBI single to tie it. Five shutout innings of relief in extras by Fergie Jenkins (4.30) and Tom Burgmeier (1-1, 4.38) kept the game tied long enough for the Sox to prevail on a Dwight Evans (.326) single in the 14th.
Milwaukee 2 at New York 7
-Tom Underwood (6-3, 3.08) tossed eight solid innings and Roy White (.260) knocked in two runs for the Yankees. Loser Bill Travers (2-7, 5.49) only lasted 1.1 innings.
Detroit 1 at Baltimore 2
- The Orioles are back in first place thanks to seven shutout innings from rookie Steve Luebber (1-0, 0.79). He defeated fellow rookie Mark FIdrych (2-3, 3.52) of Detroit.
California 6 at Chicago 2
-Wayne Simpson’s (3-4, 4.20) complete game ends the Angels four game losing streak. Don Baylor (.260) had a pair of doubles and Mike Miley (.206) hit his third home run of the season for California.
Texas 5 at Kansas City 2
-Stan Perzanowski (7-1, 1.70) and Sparky Lyle (2Sv, 3.21) hand the Royals their fifth straight defeat as the Rangers outhit the Royals 14-2
Minnesota 3 at Oakland 5
-The A’s have knocked the Royals out of first place for the first day all season as they’ve won five in a row to begin June. Don Sutton improved to 10-2, 2.36 and Gary Thomasson (.296) hit his second home run of the season for the surging A’s.

National League
Chicago 3 at Montreal 4
-Gary Carter (.235 9HR), Rusty Staub (.291 10HR) and Larry Parrish (.250 6HR) all went deep off Geoff Zahn (6-3, 4.27) as John Candelaria (6-3, 2.79) and the Expos knock off the Cubs at Olympic Stadium
Pittsburgh 4 at New York 6
-Mike Jorgensen (.281) went 4-for-4 and Jon Matlack (4.09) won his fourth as the Mets hand the Pirates just their third loss in eleven games
Philadelphia 3 at St. Louis 7
-Ted Simmons’ (.367 12HR) second home run of the game was the go-ahead grand slam in the 8th as reliever Mark Littell (3-2, 1.54) and the Cardinals draw closer to the Phillies and Pirates in the East
Houston 6 at Los Angeles 7 (11)
- Houston’s Jerry DaVanon (.242 2HR) stunned L.A. in the 9th with a game tying home run but the Dodgers prevail as Dusty Baker draws a bases loaded walk off Fred Scherman (2-2, 2.81) in the 11th
Cincinnati 14 at San Diego 6
 -Cincinnati scores the first seven and the final seven runs in a game that looked like Bengals at Chargers on the scoreboard. Mike Vail (.248 3HR) homered and had four RBI’s for the Reds who are a game behind the Astros and two behind the 1st place Padres in the West.
Atlanta 2 at San Francisco 3
-The Braves are winless in June thanks to a two-run single in the 8th by Derrel Thomas (.294) off John Montefusco (4-7, 2.85). Lynn McGlothen improved to 3-2 ,2.58 for the Giants.
