Cleveland 1 at Boston 0
-Gorman Thomas’s (.248) 15th home run of the season broke a scoreless tie in the 9th as the 1st place Indians move 1.5 games up on the Red Sox in the East. Phil Niekro (3.38), Jaime Easterly (4-1, 3.38) and Harry Parker (12Sv, 2.94) combined on the two hit shutout. Skip Lockwood (3-2, 3.32) lost his second game in relief this week.
Milwaukee 18 at New York 4 (15)
-Here’s something you don’t see everyday – or ever at all – the Brewers with a fourteen run 15th inning at New York. Ken Holtzman (0-1, 24.16) gave up twelve of the runs in his return from the minors. Don’t think his return in New York is going to stick.
Winning pitcher Bill Champion (2-6, 3.73) double twice in the improbable frame.
Detroit 1 at Baltimore 6
-Wayne Garland (6-1, 2.45) with the complete game victory as the Orioles remain a half game behind the Indians in the East. Juan Beniquez (.276) knocked in three runs for Baltimore.
California 4 at Chicago 5
-Jorge Orta’s (.301) third hit of the day capped a three run 9th inning rally off Mickey Scott (1-3, 3.86) and Terry Forster (5.84) as the White Sox hand the Angels their fourth consecutive loss to begin June after their torrid 22-5 May.
Texas 6 at Kansas City 5
-The Rangers build an early 6-1 lead off spot starter Al Fitzmorris (1-1, 6.60) and hang on to defeat the 1st place Royals. Like the Angels, Kansas City has lost four in a row to begin June after a torrid May – and April in their case as well.
Minnesota 4 at Oakland 6
-The A’s are just a half game behind the Royals after winning their fourth straight. Sonny Siebert (6-3, 3.09) pitched seven solid innings and Billy Williams (.331 12HR) homered for the surging A’s
