Seaver Shakes Struggles; Blanks Bucs

National League
Chicago 2 at Montreal 3 (10)
-The Expos sweep the Cubs who have lost six in a row. The Cubs took the lead in the top of the 10th but an RBI single by Tim Foli (.286) and sacrifice fly by Ed Herrmann (.382) won it for Montreal
Pittsburgh 0 at New York 1
-Like 1975 this season has been a struggle for Tom Seaver (4-2, 4.67) but he carries a no-hitter into the 9th today versus the Pirates. Al Oliver broke that up with a leadoff double but the Pirates failed to cash him and the game remained scoreless until the bottom half when the Mets won on an Ed Kranepool (.231) single off Dave Giusti (3-4, 1.91)
Philadelphia 2 at St. Louis 1
-The Phillies avoid a sweep and move to within 1.5 of the Pirates in the NL East behind stellar pitching by Steve Carlton (3-5, 2.28) and Tug McGraw (9Sv, 2.52). Greg Luzinski’s 13th home run of the season provided all the offence for Philadelphia in the game.
Houston 3 at Los Angeles 6
-Boog Powell’s (.208) single in the 8th broke a 3-3 tie and the Dodgers added two more to make a winner of reliever Elias Sosa (1-1, 1.93)
Cincinnati 3 at San Diego 7
-The Padres jump out to an early 6-0 lead on Gary Nolan (6-4, 2.67) and cruise home to a victory in the game and the series versus the Reds. San Diego is now in 1st by two games on Houston and three on Cincinnati.
Atlanta 0 at San Francisco 7
-Ed Halicki (5-5, 2.56) shuts out the Braves to complete the weekend sweep at Candlestick. Von Joshua (.286) had three hits including two doubles for the Giants. Atlanta has lost six in a row.

American League

Cleveland 2 at Boston 4
-The Red Sox move ahead of the Indians for 2nd  in the East as Rick Wise (4-5, 3.31) pitches a complete game for the victory. He lost a shutout in the 9th on Gorman Thomas’s (.251) major league leading 17th home run of the season
Milwaukee 3 at New York 6
-Don Gullett improved to 6-2, 3.56 and Dick Tidrow (1.93) pitched two shutout innings for his 14th save.
Detroit 3 at Baltimore 7
-The Orioles restore their winning ways – and the Tigers their losing ways – this weekend at Memorial Stadium. Ken Singleton (.386 9HR) and Juan Beniquez (.275 5HR) homered and Mike Torrez (6-3, 3.31) earned the victory for 1st place Baltimore.
California 5 at Chicago 2
-Frank Tanana (8-4, 2.69) strikes out twelve White Sox in eight innings as the Angels win their second straight following a four game slide. Chicago ace Jerry Koosman (8-3, 2.98) took the loss.
Texas 0 at Kansas City 5
-The Royals break a five game losing streak thanks to five hit, zero walk shutout by Dennis Leonard (7-4, 3.29).
Minnesota 3 at Oakland 5
- The A’s complete the sweep of the Twins and have won 12 of their past 13 games. Rookie Mike Norris pitched seven innings to raise his mark to 3-0, 2.80 and Gary Thomasson (.306 5HR) homered for Oakland. Up next is a three game set with the Royals who trail the A’s by a half game in the AL West.
