Philadelphia 7 at Pittsburgh 8
-Mike Schmidt hits a dramatic grand slam off Kent Tekulve in the 9th to tie it but the Pirates complete the sweep anyway in the bottom of the 9th on Richie Hebner’s RBI single. Pittsburgh hit four home runs in the game and before the Schmidt home run had outscored the Phillies 20-6 in the series. The Bucs lead the Phils by five games now and the two teams meet at the Vet next week.
Cincinnati 5 at Houston 4
-Mike Lum hit his 10th home run of the season and Jack Billingham (5-7, 5.11) wins his fourth game as a Red as Cincinnati takes two of three from Houston for the second time this month
Atlanta 7 at Los Angeles 1
-Dick Ruthven (7-4, 3.55) pitches a complete game and Charlie Spikes (.285 7HR) hit a three-run home run for the Braves.
American League
Baltimore 5 at New York 3
-The Orioles finish 5-2 on their trip to Boston and New York as Doug DeCinces’s two run double in the 8th off relief ace Dick Tidrow (2-7, 1.83) plated the Orioles winning run. The Yankees fall into a 2nd place tie with the idle Red Sox.
Minnesota 4 at Texas 7
-The Twins fail to complete the four game sweep as they commit four errors in the defeat. Stan Perzanowski raises his mark to an astounding 10-1, 1.73 for the Rangers while the equally impressive Jim Kern (12Sv, 1.33) pitched 2.1 innings for the save
Chicago 3 at Oakland 4
-Billy Williams and Willie Horton hit RBI singles in the 8th and Steve Dunning (3Sv, 4.18) got the save for the second straight day as the A’s extend their division lead to a full game over the idle Angels
