Frisella, Fingers Lead Padres To Another Triumph

National League
St. Louis 8 at Chicago 1
-Keith Hernandez (.286 4HR) hit a grand slam in the 8th to blow it open as the Cardinals move ahead of the Cubs for 3rd place in the NL East. Bob Forsch (9-2, 3.46) continues to justify the deal the Cards made for him that sent Cesar Cedeno to Houston as he wins his ninth game.
Montreal 2 at New York 6
-Tom Seaver (5-3, 3.76) may finally be realizing his potential as he allows just two hits in the complete game victory. Ed Kranepool hit his 8th home run for New York.
Philadelphia 3 at Pittsburgh 7
-This battle for 1st in the NL East has been no contest so far as the Pirates build an early 6-0 lead against Larry Christenson (10-4, 3.80) to extend their lead to four games. Dave Parker (6) and Richie Hebner (7) homered for the Bucs.
Cincinnati 5 at Houston 8
-Art Howe drives in three runs and Ken Forsch records his NL best 17th save of the season as the Astros down the defending NL champs. Joe Morgan had four stolen bases in a losing effort.
Atlanta 8 at Los Angeles 5
-The Braves score three in the 8th to win in L.A. despite blowing a 5-0 lead. Pete Varney, Ken Henderson and Jerry Royster each had two RBI’s for Atlanta.
San Diego 2 at San Francisco 0
-RBI singles by Willie Davis and Bobby Valentine break a scoreless tie in the 9th as relievers Danny Frisella (5-3, 2.93) and Rollie Fingers (15Sv, 2.97) do it again for the 1st place Padres.

American League
Milwaukee 2 at Boston 3
-The Brewers came to Fenway at the right time as the Sox get a much needed sweep of the three game set. Jim Rice’s 22nd home run plated all three runs for the Red Sox and Skip Lockwood earned his 15th save despite allowing a two-run shot to Charlie Moore in the 9th that made the game close.
Baltimore 5 at New York 3
-Lee May hit just his 3rd home run of the season for the Orioles to open the scoring and that would hold up as the game winning RBI as Jim Palmer (9-6, 2.88) and Dyar Miller (5Sv, 2.51) would hold off the Yankees. Baltimore’s lead over New York in the AL East is three games.
Cleveland 5 at Detroit 4 (10)
-
Home runs by John Lowenstein (6) in the 9th and Gorman Thomas (24) in the 10th steal a win for the Indians in Detroit. Both men homered last night as well. Dan Spollner (1-1, 3.02) pitched two perfect innings for the win
California 5 at Kansas City 6
-The Royals find a way to defeat the red hot Angels, but it wasn’t easy. K.C. took a 6-2 lead into the 9th and held on finally when Marty Pattin (10Sv, 2.25) got Don Baylor to ground out with men on the corners to end it.
Minnesota 2 at Texas 1 (10)
-The Twins tie the Rangers for 4th place in the division and improve to 19-17 on the road. They are just 12-22 at home at The Met.
Chicago 4 at Oakland 5
-Joe Rudi (12) and Sal Bando (6) homered to help the A’s build a 4-0 lead. The White Sox would load the bases in the 9th but rookie Steve Dunning (2Sv, 3.97) struck out Jerry Hairston to close out a win that puts the A’s back into 1st place in the AL West
