Ryan and Ivie Lead Astros Past Giants

National League
St. Louis 7 at New York 5
-Ron Fairly (.357) was the star again with three RBI’s for the Cardinals as Bob Forsch improves to 6-2, 3.41 with the win.
Chicago 2 at Philadelphia 3 (11)
-Johnny Oates’s (.276) RBI single in the 11th provided the second straight walk-off win for the Phils over the Cubs. Tom Hilgendorf (1.02), Gene Garber (3.28) and winner Nino Espinosa (1-1, 2.78) provided five innings of one hit relief for the Phils.
Montreal 8 at Pittsburgh 7 (10) -John Milner (.257 3HR) had two home runs and five RBI’s for the Expos and light hitting Pat Scanlon (.231 3HR) took Kent Tekulve (2-3, 2.60) deep in extras as Montreal upends Pittsburgh.
Los Angeles 6 at Cincinnati 3
-Rick Monday (.232 5HR) homered and drove in three and Andy Messersmith (7-3, 3.27) won again as the Dodgers prevent the Reds from gaining ground on the rained out Padres
San Francisco 2 at Houston 3
-The Astros are alone in 2nd place just a game behind the Padres as Mike Ivie (.304 14HR) added to his MLB leading RBI total with a pair of solo home runs off Ed Halicki (4-5, 2.82) and Nolan Ryan (7-3, 3.31) struck out ten.
San Diego at Atlanta, ppd

American League
Detroit 6  at Boston 5 (game 1)
-Bill Madlock (.356 9HR) tied the game with a two-run home run in the 9th and Dave Collins (.352) followed with a single and a stolen base and scored on Bill Freehan’s (.253) single as the Tigers stun Skip Lockwood (3-1, 3.27) and the Red Sox in the opener.
Detroit 5 Boston 8 (game 2)
-The Red Sox rebound thanks to home runs by Carlton Fisk (.322 7HR), Jim Rice (.317 15HR) and Dwight Evans (.323 7HR). Dave Collins (.357) had another two hits for the Tigers who are playing .500 baseball since his acquisition.
Cleveland 3 at New York 0
-The Indians score three in the 9th off reliever Paul Lindblad (2-2, 5.06) as Gaylord Perry (3.19) and Catfish Hunter (4.10) dueled to a no-decision. Jaime Easterly (3-1, 3.54) got the win in relief.
Milwaukee 0 at Baltimore 4
-Mike Torrez (5-3, 3.34) was the most sought after free agent in the offseason and he pays dividends for the Orioles today with a 3-hit shutout to put them back in 1st place.  Bobby Grich (.254 4HR) and Ken Singleton (.382 8HR) hit back to back home runs in the 3rd off Eduardo Rodriguez (3-5, 3.94) to account for all the scoring in this one.
California 1 at Minnesota 5
-The Twins and Angels have reversed fortunes the past two night. The Twins get a rare complete game – and a home run – from rookie Paul Hartzell (1-2, 4.28) to down the Angels on the first two nights of June. The Angels had won 16 of 18 to finish May.
Oakland 4 at Kansas City 3 (11)
-
The defending division champion A’s are hanging in there despite the great play of the Royals so far this season. They rally from 3-1 down in the 8th to win two of the first three at Kansas City and move 2.5 back of the Royals in the West. Paul Splittorff (11-0, 1.61) did not register a win for the first time because of Cliff Johnson’s (.340) two run double in the 8th.  Dave Hamiton (5-1, 2.73) pitched three shutout innings of relief for the win
Chicago 6 at Texas 7 (10)
-Brian Downing’s (.369 5HR) two-out home run in the 9th tied it off usually unhittable Jim Kern (1.12) but the Rangers win it in the 10th on Roy Howell’s (.234) pinch-hit single
