Rangers' Rivers Duplicates Four Hit, Three Steal Day

-Juan Beniquez hit his 8th home run of the season and Mike Torrez (8-5, 3.68) won his 8th as the Orioles even this pivotal four game set at a game apiece
New York 12 at Detroit 7
-The Yankees flex their muscles as Lenny Randle (3), George Scott (15), Graig Nettles (15) and Lou Piniella (1) all hit home runs In the win.
Cleveland 4 at Milwaukee 2
-Phil Niekro (5-6, 2.82) pitched eight solid innings and Dan Spillner recorded his 4th save as the Tribe even their series at County Stadium
Kansas City 5 at Minnesota 1
-Paul Splittorff (14-2, 2.13) pads his MLB leading win total and the Royals pound out 15 hits on the beleaguered Twins pitching staff. The Royals vault ahead of the Angels and A’s and back into 1st place in the AL West
Chicago 7 at California 6
-Don Kirkwood get the job done today for the White Sox as he holds off an Angels rally in the 9th. The White Sox led 7-3 after eight innings as Bobby Bonds, Jerry Hairston and Marc Hill each drove in two for Chicago.
Texas 12 at Oakland 5

Mickey Rivers goes 4-for-6 with three steals in consecutive games and he got help from Mike Cubbage’s five hits, Leon Roberts five RBI’s and Stan Thomas’s (1-0, 1.17) five innings of shutout relief as the Rangers knock the A’s out of 1st place.

National League
Philadelphia 10 at New York 1
-The Phillies end a five game losing streak as they score eight runs in the first two innings in a romp at Shea. Tony Perez hit his 8th home run and drove in five and Jim Lonborg (6-4, 2.97) pitched a complete game for the Phils.
Chicago 8 at Pittsburgh 5

An Andre Dawson RBI double keyed a four-run Chicago 7th as the Cubs blow open a close game and hang on for the three-run victory.
Montreal 4 at St. Louis 0

The teams exchange shutouts as Bill Lee (8-6, 2.28) scatters seven hits in blanking the Cards. Rusty Staub hit his 14th home run of the year for the Expos
Cincinnati 7 at Atlanta 1
-The Braves had a chance to tie the Reds for 3rd place but Cincinnati had other ideas as they pound out 18 hits including a solo home run by winning pitcher Rich Hinton (4-2 , 3.69).
Houston 5 at San Diego 4
-NL RBI leader Mike Ivie drove in three runs and Ken Forsch (18Sv, 2.61) pitched 2.1 innings for the save as the Astros hold off the Padres to move back to a game out in the division.
Los Angeles 5 at San Francisco 2 (10)
-Lee Lacy’s 4th home run of the season gave L.A. the lead in extras and they’d add two more to hand Tom Griffin (2-7, 5.24) and the Giants the loss. Griffin won for the Giants in extras last night.
