-Fergie Jenkins (7-3, 3.81) strikes out ten Orioles in a masterful 4-hit shutout as the Red Sox defeat Jim Palmer (9-7, 2.84) to move to three games behind Baltimore in the AL East. The teams complete the four game set tomorrow.
New York 1 at Detroit 7
-The Tigers take two of three from the Yankees as Dan Meyer hit his 2nd home run of the year and rookie Mark Fidrych (3-5, 3.67) tossed a complete game four-hitter for Detroit.
Cleveland 1 at Milwaukee 4
-Johnny Briggs’ 5th home run of the season was a 3-run shot off Gaylord Perry (7-6, 3.96) in the first inning as Bill Champion (3-9, 3.71) and the Brewers take two of three from the Tribe.
Kansas City 1 at Minnesota 4
-The Twins finally get a good pitching performance as rookie Paul Hartzell (4-4, 3.27) and Mike Marshall (4Sv, 4.50) knock the Royals out of 1st place.
Chicago 5 at California 10
-The Angels erupt for six runs in the 6th as they hand Steve Stone (2-10, 5.02) another defeat. Reggie Jackson hit his 15th home run of the season for the Angels who take over sole possession of 1st place in the AL West
Texas 3 at Oakland 2
-The Rangers sweep the A’s dropping them to 3rd place in the division. Tommy Boggs (7-5, 2.64) and Jim Kern (13 Sv, 1.33) held the A’s to just four hits.
National League
Philadelphia 1 at New York 13
-A miserable ending to a miserable week for the Phillies as their pitchers walk eleven Mets in the defeat.
Chicago 6 at Pittsburgh 3
-Dennis Eckersley (8-5, 2.55) and Bruce Sutter (8Sv, 2.91) help the Cubs to a second straight win at Pittsburgh. Cubs are back to .500 with this victory.
Montreal 2 at St. Louis 9
-Joaquin Andujar (4-5, 3.63) pitched the complete game and Keith Hernandez drives in four runs as the Cardinals pull to within 1.5 games of the 2nd place Phillies in the NL East
Cincinnati 7 at Atlanta 5
-Pete Rose’s three run triple keyed a four run Reds rally in the 9th off Max Leon (5-2, 3.12) as the Reds beat back the Braves with the series win in Atlanta. Cincinnati Is just a game out of 1st place in the NL West
Houston 6 at San Diego 3
-The Astros tie the Padres for 1st place as they take two of three in San Diego and five of seven from the Padres in eleven days. Rookie Mark Lemongello (10-4, 2.42) adds to his impressive debut season with this clutch victory.
Los Angeles 2 at San Francisco 4
-Ed Halicki (6-7, 2.64) pitches eight innings for the win as the Giants take two of three from the rival Dodgers at Candlestick.
