Nettles Hits Slams in Consecutive At-Bats

American League
New York 9 at Baltimore 6
- Graig Nettles hits a grand slam in the 1st – making it grand slams in consecutive at-bats dating back to last night – and would add two more RBI’s as the Yanks triumph over the O’s. It was a matchup of big offseason signings as Don Gullett (7-3, 3.86 ) got the upper hand on the Orioles Mike Torrez (7-4, 3.61)
Detroit 5 at Cleveland 9
- Ross Grimsley (8-1, 2.78) didn’t have his finest outing on the mound but helped himself with a three run home run as the Tribe will attempt to split the four game set tomorrow
Boston 5 at Milwaukee 6
-1975 Cy Young winner Bruce Kison (6-7, 5.40) may be on his way to a mopup role as he fails to lead the Red Sox to a four game sweep in Milwaukee. Tom Murphy (1-2, 3.31) pitched four perfect innings of relief for the win and undrafted rookie Danny Thomas hit his fourth home run for the Brewers in just 23 at bats
Oakland 4 at Chicago 3
-A Bobby Bonds error aided a four –run rally for the A’s in the 9th after Bart Johnson (4.13) and Pablo Torrealba (2.55 – who the A’s released after spring training – had shut the A’s out for eight innings.
Dave Heaverlo (13Sv, 3.22) pitched a perfect ninth for the save.
Minnesota 10 at Kansas City 4
-The Twins win consecutive games at Royals Stadium to drop K.C. to 1.5 behind the A’s. Larry Hisle’s (.304 15HR) homer hastened the departure of Dennis Leonard (8-5, 3.45) who was touched up for seven runs in six frames.
Texas 1 at California 2
-The Rangers Mike Kekich (4-5, 4.71) and Jeff Terpko (3.60) two hit the Angels, but one of those hits was a two run shot by Don Baylor (.258 9HR) as Frank Tanana (9-5, 2.41) and the Angels prevail in Anaheim.

National League
Pittsburgh 10 at Chicago 5
-Frank Taveras (.232) went five for five including his 1st home run of the season as the Bucs double up the Cubs at Wrigley. Ken Frailing (0-7, 7.85) days may be numbered in the Chicago bullpen after he surrenders four runs in 1.1 innings.
St. Louis 2 at Montreal 5
-A bounce back effort  by Bill Lee (6-6, 2.64) as he goes eight strong innings for the victory. John Milner (.267) hit his 5th home run and Rusty Staub (.294) drove in three for the Expos.
New York 1 at Philadelphia 2
-Another superb outing by the Phillies bullpen as Tom Hilgendorf (2.01) and Tug McGraw (13Sv, 2.15) close out a win for John Denny (4-7, 3.53)
Los Angeles 4 at Atlanta 7
-Marty Perez (.354) and Darrell Evans (.245 11HR) homered for the Braves who have won consecutive games for the first time in June
Houston 4 at Cincinnati 5
-Johnny Bench (.266 18HR) and more surprisingly Rick Auerbach (.250 1HR) hit two run home runs in the late innings as the Reds erase a 4-0 deficit to move into a tie for 2nd place in the NL West with Houston. Jose Cruz (.293) had three RBI’s and his 20th stolen base in a losing effort.
San Francisco 5 at San Diego 4
-
The Padres also blow a 4-0 lead thanks to some unlikely power as Rob Andrews (.295 3HR), Milt May (.246, 4HR) and Ken Reitz (.211 3HR) all go yard for the Giants in the victory. San Diego is headed to Houston with for four games and holds a two-game lead over the Astros and Reds.
