-A night after he wins the game by being hit by a pitch, Dwight Evans gets the game winning RBI by the more conventional two-run home run. Fergie Jenkins (6-3, 4.16) pitches a two-hit shutout while tough luck Billy Champion (2-9, 3.98) pitches a complete game but loses his AL high 9th decision
Baltimore 3 at New York 8
-The Yankees are now two games behind the Orioles for 1st place in the AL East with this victory. Don Gullett (8-3, 3.87) earned the win and the tireless Dick Tidrow pitched 2.1 innings for his 18th save
Cleveland 10 at Detroit 2
-Gorman Thomas hit his MLB best 23rd home run as the Tribe trounce Jim Slaton (1-5, 8.12) and the Tigers
California 4 at Kansas City 3
-The Angels have now won eight in a row, including five straight on the road at fellow contenders the A’s and the Royals, to rise to 1st place in the division. Fred Lynn (14) and rookie Ron Jackson (3) homered and Wayne Simpson (4-4, 3.88) earned the win in relief.
Minnesota 4 at Texas 1
-The Twins continue to play much better away from home as Paul Hartzell (3-4, 3.49) gets the better of Mike Kekich (4-6, 4.80) and the Rangers
Chicago 8 at Oakland 4
-
The White Sox score four in the 1st and four in the 9th with the game tied to drop the A’s to 2nd plae in the AL West. Bobby Bonds (12) three run home run in the 9th gave the Sox the lead

National League
St. Louis 1 at Chicago 6
-The Cardinals had 11 hits but only scored on Jim Dwyer’s first home run of the season. Dennis Eckersley (7-5, 2.57) got the win for the Cubs. Larry Dierker falls to 1-9, 4.53 for St. Louis
Montreal 7 at New York 2
-Steve Rogers (3-6, 3.69) pitches a complete game, rookie Dan Briggs drove in three and Larry Lintz had three stolen bases for the Expos
Philadelphia 0 at Pittsburgh 6
-Willie Stargell (13) hits two home runs and drives in four as the Pirates extend their lead on the Phillies to three games in the NL East in the opener of this key three game set. Dock Ellis (4-5, 3.65) tossed a four-hit shutout for the Bucs
Cincinnati 11 at Houston 4
-The Reds offence explodes after being down 3-0 in the 6th innings as they get a key win at the Astrodome. Pete Rose and Johnny Bench drove in three runs and Pedro Borbon pitched three innings for his 2nd save of the season. The Astros fall to 2nd place with the defeat.
Atlanta 5 at Los Angeles 8
-Superb relief work by Don Stanhouse (3-3, 3.27) and Elias Sosa (12Sv, 1.88) lifts the Dodgers to their fourth win in a row
San Diego 5 at San Francisco 4
-The Padres are back in 1st place as relievers Danny Frisella (3.00) and Rollie Fingers (14Sv, 3.06) pitch three perfect innings to hold off the Giants. Willie Davis’s single plated the go-ahead run in the 7th for San Diego
