Goltz Wins Another For Hard-Charging Halos


American League
Baltimore 5 at Boston 4
-Jim Rice (20HR) homered for the third consecutive game but they’ve all been in a losing cause as the champs are reeling. The Red Sox scored two in the bottom of the 9th but struggling MVP Bob Watson grounded out with men on the corners to end it. The Red Sox now trail the Orioles by six games
Detroit 4 at New York 5
-The Yankees keep pace in the East as they score two in the 8th on a Graig Nettles single to overcome a 4-3 deficit. Dick Tidrow recorded his MLB best 16th save
Milwaukee 5 at Cleveland 6
-Harry Parker (4-7, 5.05) shook off some recent struggles with three innings of perfect relief for the win as the Indians halt a three game slide
Minnesota 2 at Chicago 3 (10)
-Bobby Bonds single in the 10th off John Verhoeven (2-1, 4.32) made a winner of reliever Stan Bahnsen (2-3, 3.34)
Kansas City 1 at Texas 5
-Stan Perzanowski (9-1, 1.50) continues to dominate for the Rangers with this complete game as the Royals have now lost 11 of their last 16
California 7 at Oakland 3
-The Angels move to just 1.5 games behind the A’s as Don Baylor’s 10th home run keyed a five-run 3rd inning against A’s ace Don Sutton (11-3, 2.82). Dave Goltz improved to a sparkling 11-1, 2.35 for the hard charging Angels

National League
Philadelphia 2 at Montreal 3 (15)
-Rusty Staub’s 13th home run of the year won the game for the Expos who outlast the Phillies in 15 innings. The Phillies had taken a lead in the 13th on Greg Luzinski’s 14th home run but the Expos tied it on a Pat Scanlon sacrifice fly
Chicago 14 at New York 3
-The Cubs rap out sixteen hits and Steve Ontiveros drives in five as they romp the Mets at Shea
Pittsburgh 5 at St. Louis 2

Rick Reuschel improves to 8-5, 2.38 and Kent Tekulve saves his 15th as the Pirates extend their lead in the East to 2.5 games over the Phillies
Atlanta 8 at Cincinnati 12
-
The Reds score nine of their runs in the 7th and 8th as they survive two home runs by Atlanta’s Dave May to outslug the Braves. Larry Biittner and Cesar Geronimo each had three RBI’s for Cincinnati.
San Diego 0 at Houston 4
-Rick Rhoden’s (7-3, 3.00)  three hitter and Mike Ivie’s 18th home run of the season leads the Astros over the Padres. Houston will have a chance to tie for 1st place tomorrow in the finale of this four game set
San Francisco 0 at Los Angeles 5
-Burt Hooton (6-5, 3.47) and Don Stanhouse (3.40) combine on a three-hitter as L.A scores all their runs in the 6th off Vida Blue (4-7, 4.52)
