Torre Adds To Giants Bullpen Misery

National League
San Diego 9 at Montreal 1
-The Padres return to the win column after one day away as a struggling Dave Kingman (.168) drives in three runs and Randy Jones (5-1, 3.99) records an easy win
San Francisco 5 at New York 6 (12)
-The Giants blow another 9th inning lead and eventually lose on Joe Torre’s (.192 3HR) 12th inning solo home run off Randy Moffitt (1-2, 6.75). Gary Lavelle (3.51) gave up two runs in the bottom of the 9th as the Giants are now 11-6 when leading after 7 innings – no other team has more than 3 losses in that situation.
Los Angeles 2 at Philadelphia 4
-Sid Monge (2-0, 5.27) makes a spot start, the first of his career, and gets the win. Sixto Lezcano (.300) drives in three runs and Tug McGraw (7Sv, 1.08) earns the save. Andy Messersmith’s (5-3, 2.86) personal five game winning streak is over
Pittsburgh 9 at Atlanta 1
-The Pirates build a huge lead in both games at Atlanta and have no problem hanging on to this one as Rick Reuschel goes the distance and is 5-0 with a microscopic 1.14 ERA. Richie Hebner (4) and Willie Stargell (5) went deep for the Bucs
Chicago 4 at Cincinnati 7
-Ray Burris (1-1, 3.60) gives up seven runs in less than five innings as the Cubs have now lost nine in a row while being outscored 71-26 and have crashed back to .500. Joe Morgan (.344 6HR) went deep twice and Mike Lum chipped in his 7th long ball of the season as the Reds remain 1.5 back of the surprising Padres.

American League
New York 5 at Texas 2
-Ken Griffey (.316) had three hits including his 2nd home run as Catfish Hunter (3-3, 3.89) earned the win and Dick Tidrow (7Sv, 1.86) his second save in as many days
Cleveland 2 at California 3
-Frank Tanana (4-3, 3.50) and Mickey Scott (2Sv, 0.00) four-hit the Indians. Rookie Bobby Jones had a pair of sacrifice flies for the Angels
Baltimore 6 at Oakland 3
-The AL East leaders avoid the sweep as Bobby Grich’s (.312) two run triple in the 9th broke a 3-3 tie
