Palmer's One-Hitter Lifts O's to Perfect 10-0 Home Mark

American League
California 12 at Boston 7
-Don Baylor – formerly of the Red Sox – hit a pair of home runs as the Angels hand Boston a rare defeat. Jim Burton (2-2, 6.75) was torched for 7 runs while Dave Goltz (4-0, 2.54) remained perfect for the Angels who escape the AL West cellar with the victory.
Oakland 13 at New York 8
-Wasn’t Don Sutton’s (6-0, 1.86) best outing but the A’s pound out 16 hits against Ed Figueroa (1-3, 4.83) and a trio of Yankee relievers to split a rain shortened weekend series in the Bronx
Chicago 0 at Baltimore 3
- Jim Palmer (4-0, 2.14) tossed a 1-hitter as the Orioles remain perfect at Memorial Stadium. Ellie Hendricks (4) and Doug DeCinces (9) hit home runs for Baltimore. The White Sox have lost 7 in a row
Minnesota 3 at Cleveland 8
-The Indians erupt for 6 runs in the 7th against rookie Pete Redfern (0-1, 3.46). Phil Niekro (3-2, 2.96) earned the win
Texas 5 at Detroit 1
- Mike Kekich (3-1, 3.00) is erasing the memory of a miserable 1975 and Jim Kern tossed another two perfect innings of relief. He hasn’t allowed a run in 21 innings to start the season
Kansas City at Milwaukee, ppd

National League

Houston 3 at Montreal 2 (gm1)
-Nolan Ryan (3-1, 4.81) struck out 8 in 7 innings for the win. The teams had been rained out the prior two days
Houston 7 at Montreal 5 (gm2)
-Skip Jutze laced a bases loaded, bases clearing triple in the 9th as the Astros steal a sweep of the doubleheader. What is wrong with Expos relief ace Dale Murray? He falls to 0-3, 7.84
Cincinnati 11 at New York 4 (gm1)
-Mike Lum hit two home runs and drove in 5 runs for the second time on a Sunday this season. Bill Bonham , a 23 game winner last season, is now 3-2, 3.29
Cincinnati 2 at New York 3 (gm 2)
-Rookie Bruce Boisclair goes 6-9 in the doubleheader with 3 hits and 2 runs scored as the Mets hand Gary Nolan (5-1, 1.71) his first defeat
Atlanta 3 at Philadelphia 0 (gm1)
-3’s were wild for the Braves. Dick Ruthven (1-2, 2.85) tossed a 3-hitter and Willie Montanez’s 3rd of the year was a 3-run home run in the 3rd inning
Atlanta 4 at Philadelphia 5 (13 – gm2)
-Charlie Spikes tied the game with a home run in the 9th but the resurgent Braves could not complete the sweep. Tom Hilgendorf (1-1, 0.61) pitched 2.2 innings for the win while Ron Reed (0-2, 10.80) took the loss and could be given a ticket to AAA any day now
St. Louis 2 at Los Angeles 4
-Déjà vu in L.A. as the Dodgers post consecutive 4-2 victories saved by Elias Sosa (6Sv, 0.00) after trailing 2-0 early. Andy Messersmith (5-2, 2.70) won his 5th straight decision
Chicago 8 at San Diego 2
-Break up the Cubbies!! Adrian Garrett (5) and rookie Andre Dawson (3) homered in a 7 run 1st inning off Randy Jones (4-1, 4.66). The last place Cubs, ravaged in free agency by other clubs, are now alone in 1st in the NL East because…
Pittsburgh 6 at San Francisco 7 (11)
-The Pirates are out of 1st place for the first time as Andy Hassler’s Pirate debut was memorable for the wrong reasons. He allowed 6 runs 1.2 innings but the Pirates would rally from 6-1 down to send it to extras. Gary Matthews’s double in the 11th off Dave Tomlin (0-2, 4.50) would claim the Giants a victory however
