- Mike Hargrove’s single broke a 4-4 tie in the 9th and Steve Garvey blew it open with a grand slam off Goose Gossage (2-2, 6.46) as the Padres take the opener at Wrigley in a series between the current NL division leaders – and 1975 cellar dwellers.
San Francisco 2 at Pittsburgh 0
-Vida Blue’s (2-2, 3.27) 3-hitter handed the Pirates their 5th straight defeat. Willie McCovey notched his 5th home run of the season
Los Angeles 1 at St. Louis 8
-Larry Dierker (1-3, 3.05) went the distance to earn his first win and Mario Guerrero drove in three runs
Philadelphia 4 at Atlanta 6
-Darrell Evans (5) homered as part of a 6-run Atlanta 4th as the Braves have won 12 of 14. Max Leon (7Sv, 1.33) recorded the final five outs for the save
New York 2 at Cincinnati 3
-Joe Morgan stole 4 bases and then stole the game with a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 9th off Ray Sadecki (2-4, 5.74) as the Reds keep pace with the Padres in the West
Montreal 5 at Houston 2
-The Expos only had three hits but they were all in a 5-run 6th as Nolan Ryan (3-2, 4.88) continues to struggle for the Astros. John Candelaria (3-1, 2.75) pitched 8 strong for the win and Dennis Blair (2Sv, 1.15) closed it out in the 9th

Kansas City 4 at New York 2
-Those stingy Royals win their 8th straight with four relievers securing the win for starter Jim Colborn (2-1, 2.92)
California 6 at Baltimore 0
-Dave Goltz (5-0, 2.13) spins a 2-hit shutout and Reggie Jackson doubles and homers (6th) versus his former team. Mike Flanagan (0-1, 5.14) made his major league debut and lost for the Orioles.
Oakland 6 at Cleveland 4 (12)
-The Indians rallied from 3-0 in the 6th and would later tie the game in the bottom of the 10th but would finally succumb to the A’s in the 12th. Oakland Catcher Cliff Johnson had 4 hits including his 8th home run and raised his batting average to .395. Jim Perry (1-1, 1.64) took the loss in relief against his former team
Minnesota 3 at Detroit 2
- Dan Ford drove in Rod Carew with a double in the 8th for the decisive run. Struggling closer Tom Johnson pitched a perfect 9th for his 4th save – his ERA is still 6.60.
Chicago 6 at Milwaukee 7
-Hank Aaron (5) homered twice, including one to leadoff the bottom of the 9th as the Brewers score 4 in the 9th to shock the sputtering ChiSox. Rookie Rusty Torres had five RBI’s in a losing cause for Chicago
