Morgan Rallies Reds in Opener of San Diego Set


National League
St. Louis 7 at Philadelphia 2
-Reggie Smith (.239 10HR) homered and scored four runs as Bob Forsch (5-2, 3.14) and the Cardinals defeat Steve Carlton (2-5, 2.31) and the Phillies
New York 5 at Pittsburgh 0
-Rookie Phil Mankowski’s (.288 1HR) first major league home run keyed a five run New York 8th as the Mets end a five game slide. Craig Swan (2-5, 2.94) and Paul Siebert (2.81) combine to three hit the Bucs
San Diego 2 at Cincinnati 3
-The Padres were one out away from a big win in the opener of this three game set but the defending NL Champs steal it on a two-out, two-run double in the 9th by Joe Morgan (.306) off Rollie Fingers (3.28). The Reds have won four in a row, move into 2nd place in the West and are 2.5 games behind the Padres in the West
Los Angeles 2 at Houston 1
-Nolan Ryan (6-3, 3.42) walked seven Dodgers in seven innings losing to Andy Messersmith (6-3, 3.26) and the Dodgers. The Astros are now tied with the Reds for 2nd in the West

American League
Boston 12 at New York 3
-Jim Rice (.325 12 HR) scored four and drove in three and finished a double short of the cycle as the Red Sox hammer Catfish Hunter (4-5, 4.65) in the Bronx. Carlton Fisk (.322) also had three hits, runs and RBI’s in the rout.
Cleveland 8 at Baltimore 2
- The Orioles end the day in 2nd place for the first time this year as they now trail the Indians and Red Sox by a half game. Gaylord Perry (7-3, 3.45) strikes out eleven without walking a batter and Toby Harrah (.275 7HR) had four hits, four runs, three RBI’s and a stolen base and finished a double short of a cycle as the Tribe defeat the Orioles for the fifth time in eight days. Baltimore is 4-15 since starting 21-7.
Milwaukee 2 at Detroit 0
-Eduardo Rodriguez (3-4, 3.67) and Bill Castro (1Sv, 2.08) combined to four hit the Tigers while striking out twelve. Former Tiger Ben Oglivie (.329) had three hits and drove in both runs.
Chicago 1 at Kansas City 7
-Paul Splittorff (11-0, 1.48) loses his 4th shutout of the season on a Jerry Hairston infield single with two outs in the 9th.  The dominance of Splittorff cannot be understated. Rookie Ruppert Jones (.382 3SB) had two doubles and two steals. He’s earned more starts in the K.C. outfield.
California 6 at Texas 2
-The Angels win their 14th in 16 tries to remain 6.5 behind the Royals. Frank Tanana (7-3, 2.74) went the distance and Bill Sudakis (.194 3HR) hit a three-run home run in the win
