-The Yankees only had four hits, three of them by Roy White (.255 5HR), two of those were home runs and one of which won the game off Dick Drago (4-1, 2.61) in the bottom of the 9th. Don Gullett (3.34) and Dick Tidrow (2-4, 1.93) allowed only three hits to Boston
Cleveland 8 at Baltimore 5
-The Orioles score five in the eighth but it’s much too late as home runs by Toby Harrah (.256 6HR) and Oscar Gamble (.329 7HR) help the Tribe build an 8-0 lead and further tighten the top of the AL East standings. The Indians are now tied with the Red Sox a half game back of the Orioles.
Milwaukee 1 at Detroit 4
-As bad as the Tigers have been they could pass the Brewers in the standings in this weekend’s four game set. Defeating Milwaukee ace Mike Caldwell (4-4, 2.83) is a good start. Recent trade acquisition Dave Collins (.362) had three hits and the game winning RBI as he continues to thrive in an every day role.
Oakland 3 at Minnesota 1
-Rookie Mike Norris (2-0, 2.57) and Dave Heaverlo (8Sv, 3.41) hold the Twins to a run and Claudell Washington (.356 18SB) stole three bags for the A’s
Chicago 10 at Kansas City 9 (12)
-The White Sox defeat the Royals for the third time in four tries over the past seven days. A wild 12th inning as the White Sox score four and the Royals answer with three but rookie Francisco Barrios (1-0, 4.76) got rookie Ruppert Jones (.360 1HR) to ground out with the tying run on 2nd to end it. Jones had hit his first MLB home run earlier in the contest
California 8 at Texas 5
-The Angels rally for six in the seventh off Jackie Brown (3-4, .3.78) and Sparky Lyle (2.77) to upend the Rangers. Mickey Scott (6SV, 1.13) pitched three scoreless innings for the save
National League
Los Angeles 5 at Houston 6
-Mike Ivie (.299 11HR) homered and drove in three as the Astros move to 2.5 games behind the idle Padres and end the Dodgers five-game winning streak in the process. Rick Rhoden improved to 5-1, 2.59 with the win in relief and Ken Forsch (9Sv, 3.16) is now nine for nine in save opportunities.
