Lonborg Leaves L.A. Reeling

National League
Cincinnati 2 at Chicago 4
-
The Cubs Jekyll and hyde act continues as Dennis Eckersley (4-3, 2.44) and Bruce Sutter (2Sv, 2.00) combine to complete a sweep of the mini two-game set versus the Reds. Steve Ontiveros went 2 for 4 and upped his average to an NL best .379.
Atlanta 1 at Pittsburgh 4
-Dock Ellis (2-4, 3.64) scattered ten hits in eight innings in  a much needed victory for Pittsburgh
Houston 9 at St. Louis 1
-Cesar Cedeno (.292) tripled and had three hits at his former team and rookie phenom Mark Lemongello improved to 6-2, 1.43 as the Astros take both games this week at Busch Stadium and move into 2nd place in the NL West
Philadelphia 5 at Los Angeles 0
-That’s seven straight defeats for the Dodgers as Jim Lonborg (5-1, 2.70) tosses a three hit shutout and did not walk a batter. Six Phillies had two hits in the game including a pair of doubles by Sixto Lezcano (.325).
Montreal 2 at San Diego 3
-Randy Jones (6-1, 3.75) and Rollie Fingers (10Sv, 2.91) end the Expos four game winning streak and extend the Padres lead in the NL West to three games
New York 4 at San Francisco 2
-The Mets score four in the 1st off Jim Barr (2-5, 4.04) and don’t look back. Bob Apodaca (3Sv, 2.67) pitched the final three innings for the save

American League
New York 3 at Chicago 2
-Ron Blomberg (.176 2HR) hit a two-run home run at his former mates and Luis Tiant (6-2, 2.32) and Dick Tidrow (9Sv, 1.56) continued to be the Yanks top hurlers in tonights victory. Jerry Hairston led off the game with a home run  - he was signed off the Free Agent list last week.
Boston 11 at Minnesota 10
-A typical Twins outcome as they rally from 7-2 down and go ahead on Dan Ford’s (.338, 8HR) second three-run home run of the game in the 8th only to give the game right back on Rick Burleson’s 3rd home run of the year. Boston’ s Jack Brohamer (.284) and Minnesota’s Rod Carew (.291) each had four hits
The teams combined for five triples including two by Lyman Bostock (.343)
Baltimore 2 at Kansas City 9
-The Orioles were the toast of baseball in the opening weeks but the Royals have taken over since then and they crush the O’s tonight in the first match of the season between the teams that have led the AL divisions since opening day. Bruce DalCanton (3-0, 1.90) won in his spot start and Frank White(.323 5HR) homered and drove in four. Amos Otis (.288) scored four times as well.
Cleveland 3 at Texas 1
-Rookie Bill Laxton (1-0, 1.50), cut after spring training by the hapless Tigers, comes up big in his MLB debut as he helps the Indians end their seven game slide with the win. Laxton did walk nine batters while striking out eight in his six innings of work.
Detroit 0 at California 10
-Eight straight wins with an exclamation point for the Halos. Tommy John (4-3, 3.03) tosses a 4-hit shutout and chips in with his first MLB home run. Fred Lynn (.305 7HR) homered and Don Baylor (.246) drove in four runs for the Angels. Jim Slaton (0-4, 7.59) could be headed to Toledo after another lousy start for Detroit.
Milwaukee 3 at Oakland 6
-
The A’s rally for four in the 8th inning to keep pace with the Royals. The Brewers committed two errors and a balk in the A’s rally.
