Blyleven Blanks Astros

National League
Atlanta 6 at Chicago 5
-The Braves invested a lot in retaining F/A Jeff Burroughs (.213) in the offseason and he has struggled mightily. They hope today is the turning point as he hit his second home run and drove in the go-ahead run with a single in the 8th for Atlanta. Max Leon (4-0, 1.37) continues to dominate in the Braves bullpen.
Houston 0 at Pittsburgh 3
-The Astros pounded out 31 hits in the first two games at Three Rivers but only muster four singles today off Bert Blyleven (5-2, 2.96) as the Pirates maintain 1st place in the NL East. Richie Hebner (.285 6HR) homered off the struggling J.R. Richard (2-5, 6.08) for the Bucs.
Cincinnati 5 at St. Louis 2
-The Reds get well before a big weekend series with the first place Padres at Rivefront as they sweep an improved Cardinals squad at Busch Stadium following a seven game skid. Joe Morgan (.308 8HR 20SB) homered and stole two bases and Rawly Eastwick (1.72) saved his twelfth.
New York 3 at Los Angeles 5
-Visits by the Expos and Mets to Chavez Ravine prove to be good medicine for the Dodgers. Steve Yeager (.294 5HR) and Bill Russell (.232 1HR) homered and Jerry Reuss (3-3, 3.98) pitched eight strong innings as the Dodgers complete the sweep of the lowly Mets
Philadelphia 4 at San Diego 2
-Larry Christenson (8-1, 2.81) wins again and Sixto Lezcano (.304 6HR) homered as the Phillies remain a ½ game back of the Pirates as they win their series at 1st place San Diego
Montreal 1 at San Francisco 3
-Rusty Staub (.294 9HR) broke a scoreless tie with a solo shot off eventual winner Pete Falcone (1-1, 17.18) in the 9th but Dave Rader (.286) would hit his first home run off the year off Wayne Granger (2-4, 4.19) to win it in the bottom of the 9th and complete the sweep for the last place Giants.

American League
Chicago 3 at Boston 4
-Frank Duffy (.206) broke a tie with a single in the 8th as Dick Drago (4-0, 2.29) wins in relief and Jim Kaat (2-4, 2.36) takes the loss for Chicago
Minnesota 2 at New York 1
-The Twins score two in the 9th to stun the Yankees again. Tom Underwood (4-3, 3.08) carried a shutout into the 9th but Eric Soderholm (.339) was the nemesis again, tying the game with a single and scoring on a Glenn Borgmann (.235) sacrifice fly.
Texas 2 at Baltimore 1
-Bert Campaneris (.234) singled in the 9th off the struggling Nelson Briles (3-2, 6.46) to plate the winning run as the Rangers down the Orioles. Baltimore has been in 1st place since opening day but their lead is now down to a ½ game on Boston
Kansas City 8 at Cleveland 3
-Frank White (.309), Tommy Davis (.289) and George Brett (.393) each had three hits and Steve Busby (5-3, 3.93) went the distance for the Royals as the Indians remain 1.5 back of the Orioles in the East.
Oakland 11 at Detroit 3
-The A’s have their way with rookie Mark Fidrych (1-2, 4.63) as Gary Thomasson (.313 3HR) homered and drove in four and Don Sutton (9-1, 2.32) gave up twelve hits but wins once again
California 4 at Milwaukee 1
-Dave Goltz (8-0, 2.09) remains perfect and Reggie Jackson (.328) had three hits as the Angels earn a split of their two games at County Stadium
