Baltimore 8 at Chicago 9 – game 1 (10 innings)
-This one day stop in the Windy City for a make-up doubleheader couldn’t have come at a worse time for the Orioles as it extends their season-long road trip to fifteen games. They embarked with a 21-7 record but are 3-10 on the trip. Well it all seemed ok when they broke a 3-3 tie in the top of the ninth with three runs – until Bobby Bonds (.258 8HR) tied it in the bottom half with a two out home run off Nelson Briles (5.32). But it the Orioles could rest easy again when they scored two runs in the top of the 10th. Ahh but there was no way this game – this trip – would end off well as a rare Bobby Grich error keyed a three-run White Sox rally. Make that losing streak 8 for the O’s …and they have to play another game today…
Baltimore 4 at Chicago 9 (gm 2)
-This would almost be easier to take had the O’s been blown out as the score indicates. Baltimore takes a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 8th with ace Jim Palmer (4-5, 3.26) cruising. He wouldn’t record an out in the frame – a rally sparked by another Grich error. Jerry Hairston – signed off the scrap heap a week prior – would put an exclamation point on this disastrous day for the Orioles with a grand slam. First place feels like fiftieth right now if you’re the Orioles.
Detroit 4 at Kansas City 8 (gm 1)
-Another one day make-up doubleheader. In this one the season long front runners prevail in Game one as Hal McRae (.233) continues to recover from a slow start and George Brett (.394) continues to dominate opposition pitching – each had three hits in the win
Detroit 2 at Kansas City 4 (gm 2)
-Paul Splittorff (10-0, 1.53) has nearly as as many wins as the Tigers themselves. Amos Otis stole his league high 16th and 17th bases of the season. The Royals are 32-12 and have a 6.5 game lead over the A’s in the AL West
National League
Atlanta 2 at Chicago 3
-John Montefusco (3-6, 2.50) homered and carried a shutout into the bottom of the 9th but the left side of the Braves infield imploded as Darrell Evans and rookie Jerry Royster each made errors to spark a three run Cubs rally
Houston 11 at Pittsburgh 3
-The Astros pound out a remarkable 21 hits including five by Greg Gros (.364), four by Jose Cruz (.310) and Mike Ivie (.301) drove in four runs. Rookie Mark Lemongello (7-2, 1.65) has had better performances but upholds his phenom status with another complete game win. Dock Ellis (2-5, 3.98) and Bob Moose (8.89) took the brunt of the damage.
Cincinnati 3 at St. Louis 1
-George Foster (.303 11HR) and Johnny Bench (.240 10HR) homered in the 9th off Mark Littell (0-2, 2.00) to break a scoreless deadlock as the Reds end their seven game slide. Eric Rasmussen (2.78) was working on a three hitter for the Cardinals but was lifted in the 8th for a pinch hitter
New York 5 at Los Angeles 6
-Dusty Baker (.248 5HR) and Jimmy Wynn (.128 3HR) homered as the Dodgers win a third straight after an eight game losing streak
Philadelphia 3 at San Diego 2 (10)
-The Phillies take over 1st place in the NL East thanks to the majors best bullpen and a Dave Cash (.255 2HR) pinch hit home run in the 10th. Tom Hilgendorf (0.59), Gene Garber (4-1, 3.32) and Tug McGraw (8Sv, 2.35) were perfect in relief as the Phillies scored a run each in the 8th, 9th and 10th to top the 1st place Padres
Montreal 5 at San Francisco 8
-The Giants rally for five runs in the 7th as Jim Barr (3-5, 4.27) earns the win and Steve Rogers (2-5, 4.03) takes the loss
