American League
Detroit 3 at Boston 1
-It was a thrilling Fenway Park debut for the quirky rookie from Massachusetts as Mark Fidrych (2-2, 3.62) strikes out eight in eight innings for the win. Another rookie Chuck Scrivener (.213) hit his first major league home run for the Tigers.
Cleveland 3 at New York 7
-Ken Griffey (.349 5HR) had four RBI’s and four hits including a home run helping Tom Underwood (5-3, 3.17) earn the victory over the Tribe.
Milwaukee 1 at Baltimore 3
-The Orioles vault a half game ahead of the Red Sox and Indians in the East as Wayne Garland improves to 5-1, 2.62.
California 2 at Minnesota 1 (12)
-The pitcher’s duel was unfamiliar to Minnesota fans but the end result wasn’t. The Twins fall to 8-21 at home as Reggie Jackson’s (.329 9HR) two run home run in the 12th gives the Angels their 17th win in 19 games. Mickey Scott (1-2, 1.00) pitched two shutout innings for the win. Twins maligned opening day starter Bill Singer (6.85) did pitch seven shutout innings in his return from the minors.
Oakland 0 at Kansas City 4
-Steve Busby (6-3, 3.51) pitches a masterful four-hit shutout as the Royals win the opener of a pivotal series with 2nd place Oakland. Defeating Don Sutton (9-2, 2.34) to move 4.5 up on the A’s who had won six in a row coming in has to instill even more confidence in this 36-15 Kansas City ball club.
Chicago 1 at Texas 9
-Johnny Grubb (.341 6HR) homered as part of a five-run Ranger 1st that chased Jim Kaat (2-5, 2.97) from the game. Stan Perzanowski improved to a stingy 6-1, 1.64 for Texas.
National League
Montreal 2 at Chicago 6

St. Louis 4 at Philadelphia 3
-Reggie Smith’s (.242 11HR) sixth home run as a Cardinal helps St. Louis rally from 3-0 down to hand Larry Christenson (8-2, 2.75) just his second loss of the season. Mike Schmidt (.262 15HR) added to his MLB best home run total in defeat.
New York 5 at Pittsburgh 6 (10)
-Tommy Helms (.373) laced a game winning double off Ray Sadecki (2-7, 4.74) in extras to make a winner of Dave Giusti (3-3, 1.80) and extend the Pirates lead in the East to 2.5 games.
San Diego 4 at Cincinnati 6
-The Reds take three of four from the Padres to move to within 1.5 games of the lead in the NL West. The Padres were up 3-0 but home runs by George Foster (.319 13HR) and Johnny Bench (.253 13HR) helped the Reds overcome the deficit.
