Bob Gibson Shuts Out the Braves at Busch

National League
Houston 3 at Chicago 9
-The Cubs have responded to a ten game losing streak with five straight wins.  Cy young J.R. Richard (2-4, 6.35) returned to the rotation but won’t likely stay there after surrendering seven runs in 4.1 innings. Gene Clines (.244) drove in four runs for the Cubs
Cincinnati 3 at Pittsburgh 9
-
The Reds have lost four in a row as Bert Blyleven (4-2, 3.38) strikes out twelve in eight plus innings and Jack Billingham (2-6, 3.86) gets roughed up in his second NL start. Al Oliver (.283 2HR) and Willie Stargell (.279 6HR) went deep for the Bucs
Atlanta 0 at St. Louis 7
-The Braves have lost two in a row for the first time in five weeks as Bake McBride (.277) and Keith Hernandez (.262) each drove in three and Bob Gibson (5-2, 3.40) pitches a shutout. Buzz Capra (6-4, 3.24) was pitcher of the week last week but gets torched for all seven in this one
Montreal 4 at Los Angeles 2
-Gary Carter (.252 5HR) hit a 3-run blast in the 1st off Jerry Reuss (2-3, 4.08) as the Expos hand the Dodgers their eight straight loss
New York 5 at San Diego 3
-The Padres leave eleven men on base as Bob Apodaca (4Sv, 2.48) recorded another multi-inning save for the Mets. Bobby Valentine (.317) drove in three runs for the Mets
Philadelphia 5 at San Francisco 0
-That’s a clean sweep by the NL East over the West on this night to the tune of 39-11 as Larry Christenson (7-1, 2.88) pitches a three-hitter and Mike Schmidt (.266 14HR) added to his MLB best home
 run total.

American League
New York 6 at Boston 4
-George Scott (.325 10HR) doubled, homered and drove in four for the Yankees and Dick Tidrow (1.47) saved his tenth as the Yankees are now only a half game back of the Red Sox for 2nd place in the East
Baltimore 1 at Cleveland 2 (10)
-Paul Mitchell (4.02) walked rookie Otto Velez (.290) with the bases loaded in the 10th to make a loser f a Grant Jackson (2-2, 3.31). The Indians have won three in a row and the Orioles have lost three in a row as the top is tightening in the AL East with the struggles of the Orioles and Red Sox
Detroit 7 at Milwaukee 6
-Bill Madlock’s (.347 6HR) three run home run capped a five-run Tigers rally in the 8th inning as Detroit is now just a game back of the Brewers who’ve lost six in a row.
Kansas City 4 at Chicago 6
-Brian Downing’s (.353) RBI single plated the go-ahead run in the 8th as the White Sox answer a three-run Royals 8th with three of their own to defeat the majors top team. George Brett (.385) had four hits for KC in a losing effort
Texas 6 at Minnesota 5
- Johnny Grubb (.324) drove in Mickey Rivers with a triple in the 9th as the Rangers end a five game slide despite blowing a 5-1 lead. Jim Kern (1-1, 0.59) got the win in relief.
Oakland 2 at California 4
-A great matchup in the opener as Dave Goltz (7-0, 2.19) remains perfect and Don Sutton (8-1, 2.21) does not. Both interstate rivals were 8-2 in their past ten heading in. Reggie Jackson (.322 7HR) homered and stole his 5th base in the win.
