Nolan Tosses Second Shutout, Reds Top Braves

National League
Chicago 10 at Pittsburgh 3
-The Cubs explode for 7 in the 9th to avoid the sweep at Three Rivers. The Pirates have been in 1st place since Opening day but are now tied with the idle Phillies, 1 game up on these Cubs
Montreal 1 at St. Louis 2 (13)
-Greg Terlecky (1-3, 4.32) pitches three shutout innings for the win today as Lou Brock’s single ends the Cardinals six-game slide
Cincinnati 4 at Atlanta 0
-The NL’s answer to the Royals Paul Splittorff is Gary Nolan who is 4-0, 0.53 after this 6-hit shutout at Atlanta. MVP Johnny Bench ripped his 4th home run of the year.
Los Angeles 7 at Houston 4
-Dusty Baker’s 1st home run of the year chased Joe Niekro (1-2 , 5.48) and helped lift Andy Messersmith (3-2, 3.18) to his third straight victory. Elias Sosa earned his 4th save and hasn’t allowed a run yet this season.



American League
Detroit 3 at Cleveland 4
-The Tigers take a 3-0 lead early but cannot win consecutive games for the first time as the Indians win on Duane Kuiper’s 9th inning single off Vern Ruhle (0-1, 1.35). Harry Parker (1-1, 1.64) was perfect in the 8th and 9th for the win
Boston 7 at Milwaukee 2
-After two days of rain it’s Rick Miller that floods the field of County Stadium with 4 hits – including his 3rd home run of the season – he had 0 in 279 at bats last year.  Cy Young Bruce Kison is 2-0, 1.78
Minnesota 0 at Kansas City 7
-Dennis Leonard (2-2, 1.95) strikes out 10 and tosses a 4-hitter. That’s 18-0 Royals over Twins in two days
Texas 2 at Oakland 8
-Dick Bosman (1-2, 2.76) went the distance for his first victory and Claudell Washington upped his batting average to .460 with two hits including his 3rd home run
