Billy Smith Lifts O's To Another One Run Victory



American League
Baltimore 4 at Chicago 3
-The Orioles are 13-3 as Billy Smith hit a bases loaded, bases clearing triple in the 9th to break a 1-1 tie. Jim Spencer hit a 2-run home run in the bottom half to make it close but it was too late for Chicago
Cleveland 4 at Minnesota 5
-Rod Carew’s 7th inning single made a loser out of AL Fireman of the Year winner Dave LaRoche (0-1, 13.50)
Milwaukee 1 at Kansas City 3
-Mike Caldwell (3-1, 2.50) pitched another complete game but his team could only muster 3 hits in K.C.
Detroit 2 at Texas 0
-Dave Roberts (2-0, 2.39) spins a 4-hitter as the Tigers win for just the third time this season
Boston 4 at California 2
-The Red Sox keep pace in the East as Bob Watson hit a 2-run shot in the 1st, Skip Lockwood saved his 4th and Fergie Jenkins is now 2-0, 1.96
New York 3 at Oakland 2
-Two solo home runs by Cliff Johnson weren’t enough for the A’s who didn’t score otherwise against Luis Tiant (3-1, 1.67) and Dick Tidrow (5SV, 1.17)

Los Angeles 4 at Chicago 5
-The Cubs continue to surprise as rookie Wayne Tyrone went 3 for 3 and Chicago joins the Phillies and Pirates for a 3-way tie for 1st
San Diego 4 at Pittsburgh 2
-Randy Jones raised his mark to 3-0, 3.54 and Rollie Fingers saved his 4th
San Francisco 1 at St. Louis 2
-Bob Gibson is 3-0, 3.51 as he outduels Ed Halicki (3-1, 2.52);. Mark Littell (5Sv, 1.80) closed it out in the 9th
New York 2 at Atlanta 3 (11)
-Darrel Chaney’s single off Ray Sadecki (1-3, 5.91) in the 11th made a first time winner of rookie Frank LaCorte
Montreal 5 at Cincinnati 6
-The Reds score 4 in the 7th off Expos relief ace Dale Murray (0-1, 7.71) in a win  closed out by Rawly Eastwick (5Sv, 0.00)
Philadelphia 1 at Houston 2
-J.R. Richard (0-3, 5.86) finally has a good outing in the no decision. Jose Cruz’s RBI single in the 8th scored Tony Scott for the winner
