Lemongello Spins Gem as Astros Take Command



National League

-All three games in this series end in shutouts as John Curtis (7-6, 3.56) tosses a four-hitter for the Cardinals today handing Craig Swan his 20th defeat. Lou Brock (.347, 65SB) had three hits and two steals and has earned NL player of the week honours.  
Chicago 3 at Philadelphia 1

Geoff Zahn (12-10, 4.37) and Bruce Sutter (19Sv, 2.96) lead the Cubs to a series win over the Phillies. The teams began the set tied for 3rd place in the NL East
Montreal 2 at Pittsburgh 11
- Fomer Expo Tim Foli hit his 5th home run of the season and joined Rennie Stennett in driving in three runs as the Bucs put double digits on the board in consecutive games versus the sputtering Expos.
Cincinnati 0 Houston 5

The Dome was rocking today as Mike Ivie’s two-run single keyed a three run 3rd and rookie sensation Mark Lemongello (19-10, 2.55) tossed a dominant two hitter as the Astros put their foot on Cincinnati’s throat
Atlanta 1  at Los Angeles 4
-Mike Garman (14Sv, 1.94) has been excellent since taking over the closer’s role after the Elias Sosa trade midseason. The Dodgers win despite only mustering three hits – two were by Lee Lacy (.328) for extra bases.
San Diego 2 at San Francisco 6

Rookie Rob Dressler (4-2, 4.97) with a fine outing  and he was helped out by veteran Willie McCovey’s 24th home run as the last place Giants win a series versus San Diego


NL East: The Pirates lead by 11  games. Their magic number is down to 3
NL West: The Astros extend their lead to 5 games and have a magic number to 9


American League:
Cleveland 6 at Boston 12

Toby Harrah (25) and George Hendrick (16) homered in the top of the 1st but the Red Sox answered with seven runs in the bottom half off of a beleaguered Rick Waits (8-10, 5.62). Jim Rice (43HR) homered for the fourth consecutive game and drove in sixteen runs this week
Detroit 3 at New York 5
-Ken Griffey (13) homered and drove in three and Catfish Hunter (10-12, 4.33) shook off some recent struggles with the complete game victory as the Yanks sweep the Tigers
Baltimore 10 at Milwaukee 4
-The Orioles sweep the Brewers this weekend to the tune of 25-4. Bobby Grich hit his 25th home run and drove in four while Lee May smacked his 11th and drove in three. Ross Grimsley (15-8, 3.81) earned the win as Baltimore is now 13-2 versus Milwaukee this season.
Kansas City 4 at Chicago 1
-The Royals celebrate a runaway AL West title as Marty Pattin (15Sv, 4.15) gets Cleon Jones to pop out for the final out. George Brett (16) and John Mayberry (8) homered and Steve Busby (16-6, 3.00) earned the win
California 3 at Minnesota 5
-Fred Lynn staked the Angels to a 3-0 lead in the 1st with his 30th home run but Mark Wiley (6-11, 5.07), Bill Butler (4.13) and Mike Marshall (11Sv, 4.05) and the Twins would shut the powerful Angels lineup down from there as the Twins earn a rare series win on home soil
Oakland 4 at Texas 3
-Don Sutton (18-8, 2.98) improves his chances of winning 20 games as he hits a two-run single in a four run Oakland 5th on way to victory.

AL East: The Red Sox lead the Orioles by a half game still as both teams complete sweeps today
AL West:  The Royals have clinched the division crown
