Carew Goes 6-for-6 as Twins Outslug Royals

The Brewers hit five solo home runs – Tim Johnson (2), Danny Thomas (17), Ben Oglivie (8), Jim Gantner (5) and Don Money (11) – and win it in the 9th on an Ed Kirkpatrick single off Skip Lockwood (6-7, 2.58), handing Boston a critical loss
Cleveland 10 at New York 2
-Toby Harrah (26), Oscar Gamble (36) and Gorman Thomas 2(41) all play long ball as the Tribe romp Luis Tiant (14-9, 3.06) and the struggling Sparky Lyle (4.47)
Baltimore 1 at Detroit 2
-Bill Freehan’s RBI single in the 9th lifts the Tigers to just their second win versus the Orioles in seventeen tries as the Orioles fail to reclaim 1st place
Oakland 3 at Chicago 4
-Jorge Orta went 3-for-3 and Pablo Torrealba recorded his 9th save as the Sox nip the A’s
Kansas City 10 at Minnesota 11 (11)
-Rod Carew goes 6-for-6 and Eric Soderholm drives in six as the Twins hang seven on surefire AL Cy Young Paul Splittorf (26-3, 2.52), eventually winning on a Larry Hisle RBI single in the 11th. The Twins rallied from a run down in the 9th and 10th innings
Texas 3 at California 5
-Frank Tanana (19-9, 3.27) is within a win of the twenty win plateau as Reggie Jackson drives in a pair in the Angels victory

AL East: The Red Sox lead remains a half game over the Orioles
AL West:  The Royals have clinched the division crown

National League
St. Louis 3 at Montreal 4
-Former Cardinal Larry Lintz stole his 36th base and would score the winning run on a Larry Parrish single in the 9th off Mark Littell (8-7, 2.30). Steve Rogers (10-12, 3.48) went the distance for the Expos
New York 9 at Philadelphia 10

Mike Schmidt’s double in the bottom of the 9th caps a three run rally as the Phils outlast the last place Mets
Chicago 0 at Pittsburgh 4
- The Pirates clinch at least a share of 1st place as John Candelaria (14-9, 2.71) tosses a three hit shutout, striking out Bobby Murcer to end it
Atlanta 6 at Cincinnati 7

Dan Driessen (12HR) hit his second home run as a Red to win the game in the bottom of the 9th. The Reds rallied from 6-3 down in the 7th  for the win
San Diego 4 at Houston 5
-Cesar Cedeno (.304 42SB) had four hits and two steals as the Astros build a 5-2 lead and hang on for a 5-4 win. Ken Forsch (34Sv, 2.93) gave up two runs in the 9th but got Willie Davis to ground out with the tying run on 2nd to end it
Los Angles 4 at San Francisco 2

Bill Buckner went 3-for-3 and Andy Messersmith (18-9, 2.66) struck out nine in eight innings for the win

NL East: The Pirates lead by 12 games. Their magic number is down to 1
NL West: The Astros lead the Reds by 5 games and have a magic number to 8
