Bailey, Reds Overcome Astros Comeback to Win Crucial Opener

- Bert Blyleven (16-5, 2.94) and Kent Tekulve (30Sv, 2.34) lead the Bucs closer to their second straight division crown

Bob Bailey lashes a pinch-hit RBI double with two outs in the top of the 9th to plate the winning run as the Reds overcome an Astros comeback to win this crucial opener. Clay Carroll (6-1, 2.72) pitched two shutout innings for the win and Rawly Eastwick recorded his 38th save. The save would not be easy however – backup Cincy’ 3B Buddy Bell caught an Art Howe liner and doubled Alan Ashby off of 3rd with the bases loaded to end this thriller.

Jim Rice (41) and Carl Yastrzemski (14) led off the 4th with back to back home runs to turn a one-run deficit into a one-run lead and the Sox would go on to victory. Bruce Kison (16-11, 3.86) won his fifth straight start and Jim Willougby got the dangerous Oscar Gamble to hit into a game ending double play to earn his 4th save

-Lenny Randle had three hits and Dick Tidrow racked up his 36th save for the Yanks

-Steve Luebber (9-6, 3.05) tosses a five hit shutout without recording a strikeout and Tommy Harper and Ken Singleton had three hits each to pace the Orioles attack

-The Royals score two in the 7th to negate Jerry Koosman’s (19-7, 2.75) bid for twenty wins. Ken Sanders (8Sv, 2.40) pitched three shutout innings of relief for the save

-Larry Hisle hit his 30th home run and Paul Hartzell improves to 9-13, 4.39 with the win

-Stan Perzanowski (19-5, 2.70) outduels Mike Norris (6-11, 3.55) as the Rangers nip the A’s
