Astros' Cruz Past Pirates in Opener Between NL Leaders

 National League
Atlanta  13 at Chicago 3
-The Cubs have allowed 51 runs in their last four games – all at Wrigley. They called up Joe Coleman (0-3, 5.52) to start today as the staff is tired from getting beat up so much. Cubs pitchers were still forced to toss another 175 pitches in this one. Eight of nine Braves starters had at least two runs and/or two RBI’s. Marty Perez (7), Chris Chambliss (8) and Rowland Office (4) all homered for Atlanta.
Houston 10 at Pittsburgh 4
-
Jose Cruz hit his 6th home run, stole two bases and drove in four as the Astros score eight runs in the last three innings to blow out the Bucs in a potential NLCS preview. Nolan Ryan (15-9, 3.23) struck out eight in the win and Rick Reuschel (13-8, 2.66) suffered the loss
Cincinnati 2 at St. Louis 1
-
The Reds have won seven in a row as Gary Nolan (13-10, 3.65) goes the distance for the win. Reggie Smith (30) homered with two outs in the 9th to break up his shutout bid. Johnny Bench launched home run #32 for the Reds
New York 4 at Los Angeles 5
-The Dodgers answer a four-run Met’ 3rd with four of their own in the 4th inning. Burt Hooton (9-13, 3.65) earned the win and Craig Swan (5-15, 3.97) took another loss
Philadelphia 8 at San Diego 1
-Mike Schmidt (31) and Greg Luzinski (22) homered off Randy Jones (16-4, 3.37) as Steve Carlton (11-9, 2.61) prevails in a matchup of lefty aces.
Montreal 4 at San Francisco 0
-Bill Lee (16-10, 2.53) tosses his fifth shutout of the season as the Expos end an eight game slide. Larry Parrish hit his 15th home run and drove in three.

NL East: The Pirates lead remains 9 over the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros maintain a 2 game lead on the Reds

American League:
Minnesota 6 at Milwaukee 5 (10)
-The Brewers rally from 5-1 down in the 7th but lose in the 10th on Larry Milbourne’s RBI double. The Twins take 3 of 5 in this series that was extended by make up games
Boston 2 at Chicago 4
-
Jerry Koosman (17-5, 2.84) strikes out ten in a complete game victory as Chicago scores three in the 7th off Dick Drago (8-3 2.59) to hand Boston their fifth loss in six games
Baltimore 7 at Texas 4
-It was a matchup of surprising aces but it would be no pitchers dual as the O’s hang a seven spot on Stan Perzanowski (17-3, 2.52) in the 3rd which was more than enough for Wayne Garland (14-5, 2.53) to earn the win. Ken Singleton is now batting .372 as he had three hits and another game winning RBI
AL East: The Orioles extend their lead to 5 over the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals lead the Angels by 10 games as both were idle today
