Figueroa' Five-Hitter Salvages a Game for Yanks

-Larry Christenson (12-5, 3.53) pitched a complete game and added a home run to help his own cause as the Phillies salvage a game at Fenway
 Chicago Cubs 0 at NY Yankees 6
-Ed Figueroa (6-8, 3.62) shuts out the Cubs as the Yankees avoid the sweep. Graig Nettles and George Scott had two RBI’s each
Atlanta 0  at Baltimore 2
-Wayne Garland (10-3, 2.27) is looking to get his name into a Cy Young conversation the way he’s rolling for Baltimore. The O’s take two of three from Atlanta.
San Francisco 0  at Cleveland 6
-Phil Niekro (7-8, 2.81) is the third AL East pitcher to toss a five-hit shutout Sunday afternoon as the Tribe sweep the Giants who are now tied for last place overall in MLB
NY Mets 7 at Detroit 2
-Jerry Grote and Jesus Alou each had three hits and Tom Seaver (8-5, 3.10) tossed a complete game as the Mets avoid the sweep against their fellow cellar dwellers
Houston 0 at Milwaukee 3
-A fourth five-hit shutout by the AL East today – this one a combined effort by Ed Sprague (1-1, 2.53), Jerry Augustine (2.94) and Bill Castro (9Sv, 1.80). Robin Yount hit his 5th home run for the Brewers
San Diego 9 at Chicago WSox 5
-A seven run San Diego explosion in the 9th saves them from a crippling sweep at Comiskey. Steve Garvey’s 11th home run of the season was a three-run final blow in the outburst.
Cincinnati 7 at Minnesota 5
-Rawly Eastwick earned his MLB best 28th save and Cesar Geronimo drives in three on consecutive days as the Reds outscore the pitching poor Twins. Eric Soderholm and Larry Hisle each reached 20 home runs in a losing cause – Hisle going deep twice to reach the mark.
Los Angeles 3 at Kansas City 7
-George Brett had two triples and three hits overall and Buck Martinez drove in three as Dennis Leonard (13-5, 2.99) and the Royals win easily
St. Louis 4 at Texas 3
-Luis Melendez and Mario Guerrero each drove in two and Bob Forsch improved to 11-4, 3.58 in the Cardinals win. Mark Littell picked up his 18th save with 1.1 perfect innings.
Montreal 6 at California 5
-Dan Driessen’s RBI single in the 9th off a struggling Mickey Scott (2-6, 4.78) was the game winning RBI as the Expos slow down the Angels with consecutive wins in Anaheim
Pittsburgh 2 at Oakland 0

- Jim Rooker (8-6, 4.67) pitches his second shutout of the month, this a a four hitter as the Pirates win two of three from the A’s in a battle of 1975 LCS losers.

AL East: The Red Sox lead is trimmed to 1 by the Orioles with the Indians (6) and Yankees (6.5) still in the hunt
AL West: The Royals extend their lead to 1.5 on the Angels and 4.5 on the A’s.
NL East:
The Pirates maintain their lead over the Cardinals (4) and Phillies (5)
NL West:
 The Astros lead is trimmed by the Reds (1.5) and Padres (3.5).
ALvsNL: AL leads 19-17. League with best record in the 144 interleague games earns home-field advantage in the World Series
