-The A’s have lost four in a row and now trail the Angels by two games in the West as Graig Nettles hammered his 116th home run and Luis Tiant improved to 9-2, 2.50 for New York
Chicago 7 at Baltimore 2
-Bobby Bonds (14), Bill Stein (3) and Jim Spencer (11) homer for Chicago and Jim Kaat (3-6, 3.04) went the distance as the 1st place Orioles have lost three in a row
Minnesota 5 at Cleveland 4 (10)
-The Indians rally for three in the ninth to tie but a Toby Harrah error in the 10th led to the winning run for the Twins
Texas 3 at Detroit 1
-Stan Perzanowski (11-1, 1.69) and Jim Kern (14Sv, 1.30) continue their unhittable ways as the Rangers win another one on the road
Kansas City 3 at Milwaukee 7
-Robin Yount’s three run double blew the game open in the 8th as the Brewers have now won four of five. Marty Pattin (1-3, 3.63) gave up five runs in the 8th for K.C. The game was 2-2 when he entered.
National League
New York 4 at Montreal 5
-The Mets acquired Willie Montanez from the Braves for Mike Jorgensen and Ray Sadecki yesterday and he’d go 1-for-5 in his team debut. Larry Parrish had three withs for Montreal including the game winning single in the 8th
Pittsburgh 2 at Philadelphia 3
-Tom Hutton went 4-for-4 with his 5th home run and scored on a Garry Maddox ground ball in the 9th as the Phillies win the opener of this pivotal three game set to move 4.5 behind the Pirates in the East. Steve Carlton (6-5, 2.70) struck out ten and allowed just two hits in the complete game victory.
Chicago 5 at St. Louis 4 (10)
-Goose Gossage (4-4, 5.31) pitched three perfect innings for the win and Ken Frailing (2Sv, 7.43) earned the save as a pair of maligned pitchers lead the Cubs to victory
Houston 9 at Atlanta 7
-The Braves make three errors and Mike Ivie ripped his 20th home run for the 1st place Astros who drop the 4th place Braves to 5.5 games out
San Francisco 5 at Cincinnati 0
-Jim Barr (5-7, 3.90) and Gary Lavelle (2.92) scatter eight hits as the Giants shut out the Reds at Riverfront
Los Angeles 4 at San Diego 5
-Dave Winfield (10) and Randy Hundley (1) homered as the Padres remain in a tie with the Astros atop the NL West.
