Garland Shuts Out Brewers for 1st Place O's


American League
New York 4 at Cleveland 1
-The Yankees break open a low scoring tie late again as their three run 9th gives them three straight similar victories in Cleveland with a fourth game slated for tomorrow. Luis Tiant (7-2, 2.53) and Paul Lindblad (3Sv, 4.55) five-hit the Tribe as the Yankees are now tied for 2nd with the Red Sox in the East
Boston 1 at Detroit 4
-Alex Johnson’s (.255 2HR) solo home run in the 7th off Dick Drago (4-2, 2.49) gives the Tigers a lead they do not relinquish.  Dave Roberts (4-2, 2.99) got the win for the Tigers
Baltimore 1 at Milwaukee 0
-Ellie Hendricks (.255 10HR) solo home run off Gary Beare (3-4, 2.87) was all the support Wayne Garland (7-1, 2.23) needed as he pitches a four-hit shutout. Garland did walk seven batters but the Brewers left twelve men on base. The Orioles have won five in a row and lead by 2.5 games.
Texas 3 at Chicago 1
-
Stan Perzanowski (8-1, 1.67) and Jim Kern (11Sv, 1.04) continue to dominate for the Rangers who got two RBI’s and a stolen base from Mickey Rivers (.283 21SB) in the win
Minnesota 2 at California 6
-A pair of Minnesota errors in the 8th opened the floodgates for four California runs as the Angels extend their winning streak to five games heading into a key weekend series versus the Royals.
Kansas City 3 at Oakland 4 (10)
-Cliff Johnson (.333 10HR) thrilled the Coliseum crowd with a game winning single in the 10th to go with his earlier home run as the A’s move back ahead of the Royals for 1st place in the AL West. Dave Heaverlo (3-1, 3.46) pitched two shutout innings for the win in relief

National League
Philadelphia 2 at Chicago 3
-Dennis Eckersley (5-4, 2.59), Bruce Sutter (4Sv, 2.87) help the Cubs return the favour to the Phillies as they take three straight at Wrigley after the Cubs were swept at the Vet a week ago. A fourth game will be played in this series tomorrow.
Pittsburgh 2 at Montreal 4
-Woodie Fryman (3-1, 3.40) goes the distance in a spot start as the Expos avoid a four-game sweep versus 1st place Pittsburgh
New York 1 at St. Louis 0
-Rookies shone for the Mets as Bob Myrick (4-2, 3.26) pitches a shutout and Leo Foster’s (.182 2HR) home run off Eric Rasmussen (6-4, 2.77) was the game’s only scoring
Cincinnati 4 at Los Angeles 13
-The Reds are now 1-4 to begin their California swing and the Dodgers have won four in a row. Jack Billingham (4-7, 4.64) gave up six runs in less than five innings as Steve Yeager (.264 7HR) and Rick Monday (.238 6HR) each homered and drove in four for the Dodgers
Atlanta 1 at San Diego 5
-The Padres get to John Montefusco (4-8, 2.84) in the 7th to take a 2-1 lead and would open it up with three off Mike Beard (4.34) in the 8th as they extend their lead in the West to 3 over the Astros and 4.5 over the Reds
Houston 1 at San Francisco 4
-J.R. Richard falls to 4-6, 5.08 despite ten strikeouts in six innings as Jim Barr (4-6, 4.13) and the Giants down the Astros at Candlestick.
