-Jim Rice single handedly ends the champs four game losing streak as he homered to tie it off Jim Kern (0.40) in the 9th and to win it off Jeff Terpko (1-1, 4.09) in the 13th. Jim Kern hadn’t allowed a run in 25 innings before Rice’s blast. Rice was a single short of the cycle and now has 10 home runs on the season
Kansas City 1 at New York 7
-The Royals 9-game winning streak is over thanks to former Royal George Scott who hit his 4th and 5th home runs of the season to pace the pinstripers. Luis Tiant improved to 4-2, 2.44 with the win
California 1 at Baltimore 11
-Rookie Tommy John’s (2-3) ERA ballooned from 2.88 to 3.97 after today’s rough outing. Doug DeCinces hit his 10th home run of the season, tied for most in the AL with Rice
Oakland 2 at Cleveland 3
-Gaylord Perry (5-1, 3.67) and Harry Parker (8Sv, 1.54) quiet the Oakland bats – with the exception of Claudell Washington who’s four hits in a losing cause lift his average to .371
Minnesota 7 at Detroit 3
-The Twins complete the easy sweep at Tiger Stadium as Dan Ford drives in three and Pete Redfern (1-1, 3.60) records his first MLB win
Chicago 11 at Milwaukee 10
-The White Sox rally with seven runs in the 6th to erase a 7-1 deficit and hang on to defeat the Brewers. Hank Aaron (6) hit his third home run of the weekend but he was outmuscled by Bobby Bonds (2), Rusty Torres (3) and Ralph Garr (2) who all went deep for the Sox

San Diego 11 at Chicago 3
-The Padres don’t need extras today as Steve Garvey (6) bookends the week with a pair of two home run games. Rookie Garry Templeton also hit two home runs, one from each side of the plate for the Padres today – the first two of his career. The Cubs have come back to earth with five straight losses and Larry Gura falls to a miserable 2-4, 7.03
San Francisco 1 at Pittsburgh 2 (11)
-Pittsburgh was one out away from consecutive shutouts but Gary Matthews laced an RBI single off Kent Tekulve to tie it. The Bucs would eventually prevail on Bill Robinson’s single that drove in Tommy Helms in the11th
Los Angeles 1 at St. Louis 3
-Eric Rasmussen (5-1, 2.38) and Mark Littell (8Sv, 1.37) combine to strike out ten Dodgers without issuing a walk while Ted Simmons 6th home run of the season also helped St. Louis sweep L.A. The Cardinals have won 5 straight, making the NL East a tight four-way race at the moment
Philadelphia 0 at Atlanta 4 (gm 1)
-Carl Morton (1-0, 3.86) spot starts and throws a 4-hitter without allowing a walk. Dave May (3), Darrel Chaney (2) and Pete Varney (1) all hit solo shots for the Braves
Philadelphia 7 at Atlanta 3 (gm 2)
-Mike Schmidt (12) and Greg Luzinski (6) each went deep off John Montefusco (3-3, 2.40) as Jim Lonborg (4-1, 2.80) and the Phillies avoid the sweep at streaking Atlanta

-Felix Millan and Phil Mankowski each had three hits as the Mets avoid the sweep at Riverfront
