American League
Detroit 1 at Chicago White Sox 4
-Mark Fidrych’s (0-1, 3.86) first MLB pitch was taken over the wall by Bobby Bonds (3). An inauspicious start for the quirky prospect but he’d have a respectable outing in defeat. Fellow rookie Bart Johnson (1-3, 3.63) got his first MLB win for Chicago. Dave Collins – acquired late last night in a trade with Cincinnati for Jack Billingham and a conditional draft pick – was 1-2 with a pair of steals for the 6-23 Tigers.
Milwaukee 4 at Minnesota 5
-Eric Soderholm (.350 8HR) went 3-4 with a home run and Jim Hughes (1-0, 3.12) won his first as the Twins even their series with the Brewers
Boston 3 at Kansas City 4
-Rookie Rick Krueger, Jim Willoughby and Jim Burton no-hit the Royals – and lose! Allowing runs in three different innings. The Red Sox recalled Jim Burton earlier in the day because of there bullpen was tired from consecutive 13 inning games that followed a doubleheader bludgeoning by the Rangers. Burton couldn’t hold the lead in the 8th and took the loss – he is now 2-3, 6.83
New York 1 at Texas 6
-Bill Hands (2-4, 4.85) is 2-0 versus the Yankees. Leon Roberts hit his 2nd home run and drove in four runs for the Rangers
Cleveland 5 at California 2
-Toby Harrah’s 5th home run of the year broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th and Harry Parker posted his AL best 9th save of the season for the Tribe.
Baltimore 9 at Oakland 12
-The A’s score five runs in the 3rd and seven runs in the 7th to outmuscle the O’s in Oakland. Claudell Washington (.369 4HR) and Cliff Johnson (.416 9HR) each homered and combined to drive in seven runs
National League
Los Angeles 8 at Montreal 3
-Rookie Don Stanhouse (1-1, 2.20) recorded his first win and Jay Johnstone his first home run along with 4 RBI as the Dodgers end a four-game slide
San Diego 6 at New York 4
-The Padres are on a serious tear winning their eight straight as Joe McIntosh (3-0, 1.98) wins in his first start and Rollie Fingers (8Sv, 1.37) earned the save.
San Francisco 0 at Philadelphia 1
-Steve Carlton (1.72) and Vida Blue (2.74) dueled for eight innings as the game remained scoreless until Giants 2B Rob Andrews booted a Dave Roberts grounder to make a winner out of Gene Garber (2-0, 2.45) and loser of Tom Griffin (1-4, 4.34)
St. Louis 8 at Atlanta 5
-Bake McBride (3), Ted Simmons (7) and Joe Ferguson (4) homered and Mark Littell (9SV, 1.33) earned the save for the Redbirds
Pittsburgh 6 at Cincinnati 12
-The Pirates jump out to a 4-0 lead in the 1st against the eventually victorious Bill Bonham (4-2, 3.08) as Andy Hassler (0-1, 17.47), Eddie Soloman (10.13) and Dave Tomlin (6.75) all threaten their own job security with their efforts on this night.
Chicago 0 at Houston 11
-The Cubs have careened back to earth as they are shutout for the second straight night in Houston and have lost seven in a row. Rick Rhoden (3-0, 1.47) struck out 11 with the shutout in his first start of the season. Jose Cruz and the recently recalled Alan Ashby each drove in three runs while Mike Ivie ripped his 9th home run of the season.
