  • The Red Sox complete a sweep of the previously undefeated Orioles and are now tied for 1st place. Carlton Fisk drove in all four runs and Skip Lockwood earned the save for the second straight day
  • The Yankees are just one game behind after completing a sweep in New York of the 1-10 Tigers. George Scott's RBI single in the 9th sent Detroit home with their 9th straight loss
  • It was all sweeps in the AL East as Bruce Bochte's grand slam off the struggling Bill Travers (0-3, 6.75) earned Cleveland a 3-game home sweep over Milwaukee
  • Doug Flynn went 5-7 and newcomer Richie Zisk got his second game-ending hit of the week in the opener for the Rangers but Jim Kaat's shutout salveged a split for the visiting White Sox in the nightcap
  • Eric Soderholm's 4th home run of the season led the Twins to a 3-1 series win at the Angels
  • Jim Umbarger entered today with a ghastly 32.50 ERA in two starts but he'd bounce back today and then some with a 7-hit shutout. Oakland is now just a 1/2 game behind Kansas City in the AL West
  • The Cubs overcome 5-0 and 9-5 deficits to outslug - and sweep - the visiting Cardinals. Heere's a surprise in the young season, the Cubs are tied for first!
  • The Mets are recovering from a bad start winning their 4th in a row by completing the sweep at Olympic Stadium
  • Philadelphia held off Pittsburgh 7-6 as Tug McGraw saved his 3rd and the Phillies took 2 of 3
  • Cy Young J.R. Richard is now 0-3, 7.40 as Cesar Geronimo and Dave Concepcion hit back to back home runs to help Cincinnati back into 1st place in the NL West.
  • John Montefusco homered and went the distance to up his mark to 2-1, 2.05 as Atlanta salvaged a game at San Diego
  • San Francisco avoids being swept at home by Los Angeles thanks to Ed Halicki (3-0, 2.51) and Willie McCovey who hit his 4th home run of the year
