Tenace's Slam Sends Eckersley, Cubs to Tough Defeat




National League
Philadelphia 6 at New York 0
-Steve Carlton (1-2, 1.86) pitched a 4-hitter and struck out 9 and Greg Luzinski smacked a pair of home runs as the Phillies won their 4th in a row
Chicago 1 at Pittsburgh 5
-Dennis Eckersley one hit the Pirates until the 9th, but the Bucs tied it and won it emphatically on Gene Tenace’s walk-off grand slam. The teams were tied for 1st heading in.
Montreal 4 at St. Louis 3
- Dale Murray saved his 1st and John Candelaria (2-1, 2.87) got the win as the Expos break a six game slide while extending the Cardinals losing streak to five
Cincinnati 1 at Atlanta 0
-Bill Bonham (1-2, 3.28) and Rawly Eastwick (4SV, 0.00) outduel Buzz Capra (1-3, 5.03) and Max Leon (2.79)
Los Angeles 0 at Houston 4
-Rookie Mark Lemongello (3-0, 0.33) could be a phenom! He 3-hits the Dodgers while Mike Ivie’s 5th of the season, a 3-run shot in the 1st, was more than enough offensively
San Diego 6 at San Francisco 4 (12)
-Another day – another blown lead by the Giants. The Padres tie it in the 9th and win it in the 13th as Joe McInosh (2-0, 1.38) pitches the final five innings for San Diego. 


American League

New York 1 at Baltimore 2
- Lee May does it again – an RBI single in the 9th to up the 1st place Orioles to 7-0 at home
Detroit 5 at Cleveland 3
- The Tigers break their 10 game slide thanks to 8 strong innings from Jack Billingham (1-2, 2.96)
Minnesota 8 at Kansas City 4
- Larry Hisle (3), Dan Ford (3) and Eric Soderholm (5) all go deep in the victory
Chicago 7 at California 3
- Steve Renko (1-2, 7.27) shakes off some early season struggles and Jorge Orta drives in three as the Sox hand the Angels their eighth loss in ten games.
Texas 5 at Oakland 4 (15)
-Joe Rudi’s 2 home runs helped the A’s back from 4-0 down but the Rangers would win in extras on Mike Cubbage’s RBI single
