Candelaria Nearly Shuts Out Cubs in Montreal victory

Montreal, QC - The Expos young ace John Candelaria picked up from his strong 1975 finish with a masterful opening day performance at Olympic Stadium. Candelaria fanned ten and was one out away from a shutout before Cubs rookie Andre Dawson hammered an RBI double in the 9th. Each of these teams will be reliant on young talent in 1976, but veteran Rusty Staub led the way for the home side with a home run and 3 RBI's. Chicago finished last in the National League a season ago and lost many key pieces in Free Agency including 75% of their starting infield in Bill Buckner (Dodgers), Davey Lopes (Astros) and Chris Speier (Twins).
