Duffy Dusts off Baltimore; Boston Retakes Lead


American League:
Boston 2 at Baltimore 1 (12)
-A tense contest results in the Red Sox leapfrogging the Orioles for 1st place in the AL East. Reserve SS Frank Duffy knocked in reserve Catcher Dave Rader with the winning run in the top of the 12th. Skip Lockwood earned his 38th save when he got pinch hitter Terry Crowley to bounce out to end it after walking the bases loaded
Milwaukee 4at New York 5 (11)
-
Don Gullett (13-6, 3.36) earns the win in relief thanks to Sandy Alomar’s game winning single
Cleveland 5 at Detroit 1
-John Lowenstein (16HR) homered and drove in three and Gaylord Perry (11-11, 4.06) went the distance for the win
Chicago 0 at Kansas City 3
-Dennis Leonard (19-9,  2.83) with a masterful two-hit, ten strikeout shutout to prevent Jerry Koosman (19-8, 2.77) from winning #20
Minnesota 4 at California 3
-The heavy hitters flex their muscles in this one as the Twins’ Dan Ford (26)  and Eric Soderholm (35) and the Angels Don Baylor (32) and Fred Lynn (31) go deep in the Minnesota win.
Texas 2 at Oakland 4
-The A’s hand the Rangers their fourth straight loss. Dave McKay had three hits and Joe Rudi had two RBI’s

AL East: The Red Sox leapfrog the Orioles and lead by a half game with one more tilt between the clubs tomorrow.
AL West:  The Royals have clinched the division crown

National League
Philadelphia 9 at Montreal 2
-Larry Christenson (15-11, 3.57) with the complete game win and his fourth home run of the season as the Phils romp Bill Lee (16-14, 3.07) and the Expos.
Chicago 1 at New York 5 (10)

Jerry Martin’s 9th home run of the year was the game winning grand slam in the 10th off of Tom Dettore (6.42). Loser Bob Locker (3-3, 5.08) had loaded the bases.
St. Louis 1 at Pittsburgh 3
- Omar Moreno has only been playing regularly since August but he steals his 31st and 32nd bases of the season and Kent Tekulve recorded the final five outs for his 31st save in the Bucs win over the Cards.
San Diego 6 at Atlanta 2

Joe McIntosh earns his 16th win and Dave Winfield drives in two and steals his 29th base for the Padres
Los Angeles 3 at Cincinnati 5
-Rawly Eastwick has saved 40 in consecutive seasons and Joe Morgan swipes his 70th bag as the Reds down Jerry Reuss (17-7, 3.53) and the Dodgers at Riverfront.
San Francisco 5 at Houston 13
-
Cesar Cedeno scored four runs and Jose Cruz drives in four as the Astros romp again at the Dome

NL East: The Pirates have won the division for the second straight season
NL West: The Astros lead the Reds by 5 games and have a magic number to 6
